UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations General Assembly has stamped its approval on four resolutions aimed at strengthening reg
ional and internat
ional peace and se
curity presented by Pakistan.
The resolutions we
re recommended by the 193-member assembly’s Disarm
ament Committee where the texts were adopted by the overwhelming support of its membership.
Of these, three resolutions dealt with reg
ional disarmament, convent
ional arms control at reg
ional and sub-reg
ional levels as well as Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in the reg
ional and sub-reg
ional context.
The fourth Pakistani resolution sought se
curity assurances for non-nuclear states.
The ‘Conclusion of effective internat
ional arrangements to assure non-nuclear-weapon states against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons’ resolution was adopted by a vote of 125 in favour to none against, with 62 abstentions.
The resolution, titled ‘Convent
ional arms control at the reg
ional and subreg
ional levels’, was adopted by a vote of 183 in favour, with only India casting a negative vote. Four countries abstained.
The resolutions on “Reg
ional Disarmament” and “Confidence-building measures in the reg
ional and subreg
ional context” were adopted by consensus.
Diplomats said the approval of the resolutions by the General Assembly was as an acknowledgement of Pakistan’s commitment to promoting the objectives of reg
ional and global disarm
ament as well as strengthening internat
ional peace and se
curity.
At a time of growing mistrust
and rising tensions in various regions of the world, especially in South Asia, reg
ional approaches to disarm
ament to strengthen peace and se
curity had assumed greater relevance and significance, they said, noting that the General Assembly has long recognised that internat
ional peace and se
curity was co-dependent on stability at the reg
ional and sub-reg
ional levels.
Internat
ional efforts towards disarm
ament and arms control were reinforced and complemented by reg
ional approaches towards this end, it was pointed out.
